| Army to upgrade counter infiltration grid on LoC in JK | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 16: Senior Army functionaries in the Northern Command have directed troops, guarding the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir, to give more importance to the upgrading of counter infiltration mechanism than on counter terrorist grid. According to the Army authorities the state has witnessed marked decline in the level of militancy related violence and activities during the last three years which had upset agencies across the LoC. Hence these agencies were trying to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir for giving a fillip to the incidents of subversive violence. They believe that the recent spate in the ceasefire violations had been the result of a plan of agencies across the LoC under which militants had to be given a safe passage for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. One senior Army officer said that when the Pak agencies, including the Army, found that ingress routes had been sealed by the Indian troops they started violating ceasefire by targeting Indian posts and pickets for the simple reason of helping militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. In reply to a question the officer said that India had deployed sufficient number of troops on the LOC and the IB and once Pakistan Army resorted to heavy firing on the Indian posts and pickets "we will have retaliate with full force." He said that Pakistani Army officers had adopted tough postures during the latest flag meeting by denying their involvement in ceasefire violations despite the fact that "our side" furnished documented evidence. He said that it would be better for Islamabad to tackle the current political and security crisis instead of trying to divert peoples' interest from the internal turmoil to the border conflict. Reports said that the field commanders in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been given blanket powers for initiating any step they would find it feasible to silence the Pak gunners. |
