| Govt plans to bring 4128 Sarpanches, 29707 Panchs under insurance cover | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 16: The Rural Development and Panch-ayat Raj Department has invited registered insurance companies for providing insurance cover to members of the Panchayat committees in Jammu and Kashmir. According to official reports, the insurance company that accepts the invitation from the Government it will have to provide security cover to 4128 Sarpanchs and 29707 Panchs in the state. These Panches and Sarpanchs had been elected in the Panchayat elections held in the state in 2011. Official sources said that the decision to bring Sarpanchs and Panchs under an insurance cover was taken after some of the Panchayat committee members came under fresh attacks from militants. Sources said that providing insurance cover to Sarpanchs and Panchs would prevent Panchayat committee members from quitting. According to these sources, another step being initiated by the Government was to provide some honorarium to the elected members. The insurance shall cover the period from the date of issuance of the policy till the end of the present tenure of Panchayats in 2016. The Government has conveyed to various insurance companies to intimate to the Rural Development Department their plan on charging the rate of premium. |
