| Simmering discontent continues despite all 'ministerial privileges' | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 24: Even as the spate of protests and threatening through supporters including Panchs and Sarpanchs stage managed by the politicians dropped from the Ministry or not inducted on Jan 15 have subsided, their simmering discontent and annoyance is far from over. The overtone of the statements and political actions smack of the anger and resentment, no matter they continue to uphold the 'loyalty' tag outwardly with their respective parties. They continue to enjoy all privileges of power , yet the grouse is writ large in their actions. One is prompted to ask why this desperation to cling on to chair of Ministry…..? Chief Minister Omar Abdullah effected reshuffle and expansion of his Cabinet, in fact a much delayed exercise on Jan 15 which apparently turned many a faces jubilant and made few sullen. These are inherent moves in politics and governance which see some people being taken on board and others already on posts after some time as an outgoing lot. And in coalition Governments such steps become all the more a tedious and complicated job because of the constraints of sharing and less berths in the Council of Ministers in view of all allies to be accommodated, which is why an arrangement is seen with such Governments of giving chance to every deserving contender after a reasonable time. This is precisely what Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Congress leadership envisaged and did while giving a new shape to the Council of Ministers. However, contrary to what we see at the Centre and other States having Governments coalition with two or more parties at the time of reshuffle and expansion steps, we have been seeing a series of proxy protests organized through the dropped ones or those who contended the berths desperately. Some of them, if not all have made it more than explicit being a Minister is the only aim and objective of being in politics. The slogan of so called 'serving' the people which politicians do not fail to repeat in statements and in public rallies sound cliches with such leaders hankering after the Ministerial berths. It is more than clear they watch only their self interests in clinging on to chair of power. This is despite there is not much difference in the package of salaries and other perks they are entitled as Ministers as well as MLAs. The grouse is there, notwithstanding the fact that continue to enjoy all those facilities and privileges which were there as Ministers. Palatial official accommodation is in place and they continue to move in vehicles with red lights followed by security cavalcades, to which an MLA is not entitled normally. Nothing much has reversed or changed only except their official chambers and the tag of Ministries or the work they would perform as Ministers. Is therefore the 'work' and 'service' as Ministers so important and lucrative……? One wonders, it is certainly, which is why this desperation. |
