| UN snubs Omar | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had got rebuff from the United Nation for this proposal to lift up the United Nations Military Observers Group from the State. The rebuff was bound to come as the statement from him was less on substance and more on rhetoric. The statement it appears was made to appease the Central leadership, read Congress, whose assistance, more so pre-poll alliance he needs desperately to stay in power. The statement by the Chief Minister, at fag end of his office, was made when India had lodged its strong protest with the Pakistan over beheading of the Indian Solider and consistent violation of the ceasefire agreement in place since 2003. The India had also made it clear that it will allow any UN probe into the incident of the beheading of the Indian solider. The stand was quite logical and in tune with the Indian stand that Kashmir is an integral part of the country and any dispute had to be resolute with Pakistan alone and not with international community and also not with any international organization. Omar taking cue from this stand, and to prove as more loyal than the King, had said that UNMOG had failed to check the sanctity of the ceasefire. The UNMOGP has limited resources and personnel to keep watch on long LOC. The job is rightfully entrusted to the Army and it's doing its best for it. It was established by the UN Security Council and can rightfully be terminated by it alone. The statement also shows lack of political clarity especially on the international policies by the Chief Minister, who heads the most sensitive State in the country. The CM should have if he was serious on this account, that Pakistan must desist from ceasefire violation and should have appealed the international community to take notice of it. However, it seemed that he was eyeing political goal rather than anything more. It's for this reason that PDP had said that the statement was in line of the NC policy of making double speak at different places and different times. |
