When CA ratified JK's accession to India | Naya Kashmir Day | | early times report Jammu, Feb 4: The discussion for ratification of Jammu Kashmir's accession in the Constituent Assembly commenced on February 5, 1954. The discussions continued on February 6 as well. There was just one note of dissent. It came from Abdul Gani Goni. However, Goni's dissent note was not adapted and he had to leave the House amid thumping applause of the members. During the discussions, the members criticized Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Sher-e-Kashmir who had been put behind the bars on August 9, 1953. The then Prime Minister, Bakshi Ghulam Moham-mad played a vital role. He quoted extensively from Sher-e-Kashmir's statements Bakshi quoted the statement of April 12, 1952. "The decision of the people of Kashmir to accede to India was irrevocable. Under no circumstances would Kashmir lower the Gandhian flag of secular democracy." He also quoted a statement of Mirza Moham-mad Afzal Beg published in Hindustan Times on April 17, 1952. "If Kashmir had gone to Pakistan the voice of ‘New Kashmir’ would have been strangled. Kashmir today represents not a mere territory of natural beauty. She represents a progressive movement which is directed for the common people's wefare. If Kashmir had acceded to Pakistan, this great movement would have received a set back for all time to come. The soul of Kashmir would have been crushed." The motion was adapted amid deafening applause from the members. And when it met on February 13, Raja Mohammad Afzal Khan urged the House to include February 6 in the list of public holidays as Naya Kashmir day. Ghulam Hassan Khan and Ghulam Nabi Hamdani seconded it. However, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad said the Naya Kashmir day can be better celebrated on the day when the State Constitution comes into force.
