KP township in Kashmir find takers in Valley | | | early times report JAMMU, Feb 4: For the first time in 23 years, the voices of migrant Kash-miri Pandits have echoed from Valley. Some voices have supported a separate homeland for them in Kashmir. Gone are the days when even politicians from ruling class were hesitating to publicly favour the return of Pandits to Valley and were blaming former Governor of the state Jagmohan for the mass exodus of minority from Kashmir to give a clean chit to the separatists and militants who forced the pandits and other minorities and some main stream political activists to flee from Valley after the militancy gripped Kashmir in 1989-90. There is a change in the thinking. The leaders from progressive political parties term the migration of pandits a conspiracy and hold Congress and NC responsible for the same. Earlier it was a veteran Trade Unionist from Kashmir and a People’s Conference leader Mir Ghulam Rasool who accused the Congress and NC for mass exodus of Pandits saying that it was with their wrong policies that Kashmir's pluralistic culture which was nurtured for centuries together by the members of two communities received a setback. Mir publicly demanded return of Pandits to Valley and appealed his Muslim community members to receive them with open arms as Kashmir has been deprived of a great community which has made tremendous contribution in the socio -political field. Mir even demanded restoration of Hindu shrines in Valley and removal of encroachments from them. He made a special reference to Narannag temple in Wangath Kangan in Ganderbal district whose land he alleged was encroached by some people enjoying patronage of some politicians of ruling class. Soon after Mir's statement senior PDP leader and district president Anantnag, Abdul Rahim Rather while criticizing Government over the plight of Kashmiri Pandits stressed on construction of Jagti Type Township in Kashmir for their rehabilitation. Rather who visited various migrant camps at Jammu including Jagti Township was shocked to see the problems of camp inmates especially at Jagti who face 16 hour power cut and were also deprived of other basic amenities including medicare etc. Addressing the meetings of the KPs he took the Government to task for not exploring possibilities of constructing a Jagti type township in Kashmir for return of Pandits to Valley. If they could not take such a step even after the 23 years of migration then how this Government will settle the Pandits back in Valley, he asked? He termed the tall claims of Government on honourable return and rehabilitation of Pandits to Valley as hollow saying it needs a commitment and will to convert its words into deeds. Rather said Government should construct a township in Valley and provide all facilities to migrant Pandits there which they are being provided at Jammu if it is really interested in their return. He ridiculed the Government for stopping the relief of those families whose children were provided Government jobs in Valley and said such policies will never encourage return. The Government has to create a sense of security and confidence among the migrants before their return, he added. He said Kashmiris will not oppose the return of Pandits or construction of the township as Pandits are part and parcel of Kashmir and have the same right on the land of Kashmir as the members of majority community. Rather also supported the restoration of migrant property as well as passage of Kashmiri Hindu Shrines and Temples Bill with basic facilities to migrants putting up at Jagti and other camps in Jammu.
