Drug abuse among youth rampant in Kashmir | | | early times report Srinagar, Feb 4: Mohsin (name changed), a 28-year-old Information Technology professional from north Kashmir died some months ago 'mysteriously.' Just two months before his death his parents had brought him to a psychiatrist in Srinagar who diagnosed that Mohsin was a multiple drug abuser. He advised his parents to admit him in the hospital for de-addiction treatment. "He had died because of consuming heavy dose of pills. He was a multiple drug abuser and had been taking cough syrup and sleeping pills in huge quantity for 10 years. Due to social stigma, his parents couldn't take him for treatment," the doctors added. Similar was the case of Irfan (name changed), a 34-year-old unemployed engineering graduate from south Kashmir. Irfan, according to the doctors had been addicted to taking things like shoe polish and glue stick after failing to get a job. "One morning when Irfan didn't wake up till late, his parents went to his room only to find their son dead. He died because of an excessive dose," the doctors said. These are not isolated cases in Kashmir. A study conducted by doctors at Psychiatric Hospital Srinagar reveals substantial increase in the number of patients diagnosed as drug abusers during last one decade. The study shows that a majority of drug users are male. Almost half of them were between 16 and 25 years of age and 86 per cent between 16 and 35. Dr Mushtaq Margoob, Valley's leading psychiatrist, warns that the abuse has assumed a kind of epidemic and its consequences would be disastrous on the society. "The problem needs to be handled immediately, otherwise it would be too late to act. Nobody living in Kashmir can be exempted from the responsibility. There is need to make awareness especially among youth about the hazards of drug abuse otherwise next generation would be doomed," Dr Margoob warned. "The drugs are easily available in the market. There should be accountability and restriction on the sale of these drugs," he said. Dr Arshad Hussain, a renowned psychiatrist of the Valley says abuse of Codeine and other medicinal opioids have reached epidemic proportions in the Valley. "Drug abuse is thought to be an urban phenomenon in other states, but in Kashmir it has spread deep into the rural community also," Dr Arshad said. Dr Arshad further said, "70 percent of the abusers in the Valley consume medicinal opioids and related compounds like Corex and other cough syrups, Spasmoparoxvon, Pentazoeine and Diazepam."
