| Taj's gag order fails to impress HODs, private practice continues | | | Early Times Report jammu, Feb 6: It is almost three weeks now when the State Government had directed heads of the departments of Government Medical/Dental Colleges in both Jammu and Srinagar to abstain from private practice in the interest of patient care but some of the HOD's continue to violate the order without inviting any reprimand. Either the different State Government agencies are in deep slumber or together they are hand in glove with the erring doctors and trying their level best to shield them by not reporting the fact that despite the ban the head of the departments have been indulging in private practice. A random visit to the clinics of senior doctors clearly exposes how seriously the order has been implemented on ground zero and how brazenly the HOD's are engaged in private practice without fearing any Govt action. In some cases HOD's have started working in their private clinics under different names to escape the action. Prof. Ashutosh Gupta, Head of the Regional Cancer Centre, in Government Medical College continue to treat patients at his private clinic in Krishna Nagar area opposite GGM Science College. In the absence of adequate facilities in the RCC the head of the department has been reportedly treating patients at his private clinic and charge hefty consultation fee and do not allow them to purchase their own medicines. After the ban was imposed by the Government on January 17, 2013; Prof Ashutosh Gupta started working at the behest of proxy consultant, a patient who recently visited residence of Prof Gupta complained. As per eyewitness accounts Prof Gupta has appointed one of his junior consultants in the Jammu Oncology clinic but in reality he is personally treating cancer patients and administering them chemotherapy in the centre. In some cases, he even forces patients to receive blood transfusion at his private clinic without having the requisite license and permission to do so. Some of the staff of Regional Cancer Centre is also employed by the Head of the department to work at his private clinic, patients complained. The prescriptions with names of junior consultant clearly show that originally Prof Ashutosh Gupta continues to examine patients and treat them at his private clinic. To avoid any action against them the consultants examining patients at Jammu Oncology have not been writing date of examination. Poor patients who have been forced to visit the private clinic said, the handwriting samples of the hospital records/patient files can be examined by the hand writing experts or the forensic experts to establish the fact that Head of the department is indulging in private practice even after the State Govt had imposed a ban on the same". However, it remains to be seen whether the State Government would come forward and stop the illegal practice or continue to remain a mute spectator by not coming to the rescue of the poor patients in need of better patient care. |
