Tokenism needs to halt, 'Gen Y' needs due recognition
3/11/2013 12:58:59 AM
KUNAL SHRIVATSA
JAMMU, Mar 10: The International Women's Day was observed across the globe on this March 8 like past years and J&K was no exception where the day was also celebrated with much hullabaloo, however, the latest figures on 'Generation Y' -the fairer sex unemployment in the state has nothing to cheer about either for the women folk or the Government as the number of unemployed females, according to latest data, is alarmingly high in the State.
On the occasion of Women's Day, the various State Government agencies did not miss an opportunity to make tall claims on taking slew of measures in getting women empowered and improving their overall condition in every function related to the event but the reality is somewhat different.
In what could be described as ironic, the female unemployment ratio in
the State stands at staggering 17.1 percent which is far too high when
compared to the neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and
Himachal Pradesh where the rate of unemployment among females is 11.7
percent, 2.8 percent, 2.8 percent and 2.5 percent respectively.
The figures on female unemployment in J&K have revealed the true picture on 'Women Empowerment' in the State and some of the females with whom this scribe spoke on the issue minced no words in lamenting the State Government for its 'artificial efforts' in providing a better and honourable life to fairer sex.
"The higher rate of unemployment among women in Jammu Kashmir clearly reflects that the State Government has miserably failed in fulfilling
its responsibility…..The Government misses no chance in claiming that it is doing a lot for the betterment of the women but the statistics
are enough to deflate the claims as in making females of the State self-reliant and bread earner for their families, a lot more needs to be done," Henna Sharma, an Engineering student said.
If the rate of unemployment in females in J&K is highest among the North Indian states, the overall joblessness scenario among educated lot within Jammu and Kashmir, also presents a gloomy picture as it has the highest unemployment rate of 5.3 percent in comparison to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana where 2.8 percent, 2.8 percent,
2.7 percent and 2.6 percent of unemployment has been recorded respectively.
Overall there are about 5.94 lakh youth, who have registered themselves with the employment department in order to earn a suitable job, however, the figures are inconclusive as the process of registration is a voluntary step and there may be a possibility that a large number of youth have skipped the registration procedure.
