335 accidents, 223 deaths in 4 years, yet Kishtwar lacks trauma hospital

Jammu, Mar 10: Peripheral roads in Jammu and Kashmir have turned red with human blood year after year, leaving innumerable dead, grievously injured and even one orphaned, yet despite quite a few initiatives by the government, the gory incidents of road mishaps have continued unabated.
As per the report of the experts and state estimate committee headed by MLA Mohammad Yousaf Tarigami, poor roads and insufficient and inadequate health infrastructure to meet such incidents of trauma are the two main reasons for high death toll.
In last four years, Kishtwar District of Jammu province witnessed 335 accidents in which 223 people lost their lives, beside 579 received injuries; most of them grievous in nature yet, it lacks trauma hospital and at the time of accidents, the hospital authorities and social organizations are seen helplessly referring critically injured to Jammu wherein most of them succumb while enroute. Leave aside the trauma hospital, main District Hospital Kishtwar also lacks infrastructure in terms of facilities such as CT scan. Astoundingly, no critical care ambulance is available in the hospital despite government's announcement in this regard some four years ago.
District hospital Kishtwar also suffers on account of shortage of Doctors, Funds and Paramedical staff. Every year more than 2.50 lac patients visit Kishtwar hospital OPD from far flung areas.
A renowned social worker and member Red Cross Committee Kishtwar in his report with regard to accidents in Kishtwar District submitted to Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar alleged that officials of District Hospital Kishtwar and other related hospitals in Kishtwar District did not provide any ambulance facility to the accident victims without being paid. The report further stated that during accidents, the police vehicles/private vehicles/Red Cross officials personal vehicles are being used to ferry injured and dead bodies from accidental spot to Hospital and demanded an immediate sanctioning of an ambulance to Red Cross Kishtwar so that the needy people and various accidental victims could get better medical attention on time in case of such eventuality.
It is pertinent to mention here that 19655 accidents took place in Jammu and Kashmir in 2009-2010-2011 in which 3079 people lost their lives while 22837 persons got injured.
