| Unidentified militant killed in Handwara encounter | | | Srinagar: One unidentified militant was killed in an encounter between security forces and militants in Mooldari Upper Rajwar forest area of Kupwara district Friday. “Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the forests, a search party of Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, 21 RR, 6 RR, 92 Battalion of CRPF started a combing operation to flush out the militants,” police sources told reporters. They said that during the operation the militants opened fire on the search party triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight an unidentified militants was killed a police official said and added searches are still on. Meanwhile Superintendent of police Handwara Choudhary Muhammad Aslam told KNS “On specific information about the presence of militants in Mooldari upper Rajwar forests a joint party of Police 21RR, 6 RR, 92 battalion of CRPF cordoned off the area and started searches in the forests. “Heavily armed militants who were hiding in the forest opened indiscriminate fire on the joint party. The fire was retaliated and in the gunfight one militant was killed. Most of the encounters in Handwara are reported from Rajwar area. The Police said Rajwar is a vast area covered with thick forest provides an ideal place for the militants to hide. The area also consists of 32 small villages placed sporadically over and area whose borders meet with the Loc through Tanghdar sector. |
