| JKPA celebrates World Press Freedom Day at Nigeen Club | | | Srinagar: The Jammu Kashmir Press Association (JKPA) organized a function on Friday at Nigeen Club here which was attended by a large section of journalists, Central University and Kashmir University students, doctors, professors and intellectuals. The function was presided over by Mohammad Sayeed Malik and Satish Jacob was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Iqbal Wani, organizer JKPA welcomed the guests and he dwelt at length on the hardships faced by the Media in J&K State. He cited various instances to substantiate his averment. The President JKPA said on the occasion that the WPFD serves an occasion to inform citizens of the world about freedom of the Press, how publications are censored, fined, suspended and even closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers harassed, attacked, detained and even assassinated. He said the theme for 2013 is “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media” which calls for safety and security of journalists, the issue of impunity and online safety. It serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to Press Freedom and is also a Day of reflection among media professionals about issues of Press Freedom and their professional obligations. Above all, it is a Day to pay tributes to those Journalists, who have lost their lives in the discharge of their professional obligations. He said the press has manifold responsibilities and gives shape to public opinion. By raising its powerful voice against any attempted invasion of people’s rights and liberties, it serves as the ever-watchful guardian of the people, but needs freedom which has often been denied to it. He urged the journalists to uphold ethics of Journalism and sink down their differences and finally act in the interest of all concerned. This is what is assumed in the freedom of Press and this is what the Press must propagate. It is for this reason that Jammu Kashmir Press Association stands formed. It has come into being on 30th October 2007 and since then has been working ceaselessly for the betterment of our community. It has been highlighting Media-related problems right from the day of inception of this Association and in that journey, the Executive Members got opportunities to have detailed interactions with Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Chief Minister, N.N. Vohra, the Governor, Omar Abdullah, Central I&B Minister Ambika Soni and Justice Markandey Katju, Chairman Press Council of India. He also highlighted problems of people of the State in a big way and lastly reminded all to ponder over the purpose and the objective for which the Allah Almighty has created us on the surface of this Earth. He said Allah has given us full autonomy but for a limited period. We shall be recalled, resurrected and then audited on the Day of Judgement with no one to plead our case. Shujat Bukhari, Editor Rising Kashmir, dwelt at length on journalism and drew contours of Media in Kashmir. His suggestions were educative and informative.
