Huge assets found in Pune, Navi Mumbai
5/7/2013 11:25:46 PM
NASHIK: The Anti-Corruption Bureau trawled through 78 personal files of suspended PWD executive engineer Satish Chikhlikar of which 27 were documents of his properties spread across Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad and Nanded. The properties included flats, plots, factories and offices, most of which he had rented out and thus had a steady flow of income from them. Officials also found Chikhlikar's will in the files they recovered for scrutiny.
Shashikant Mahavarkar, superintendent of police (ACB) told reporters on Monday that the ACB had found nothing so far in the documents seized to suggest any monetary transactions between the suspended engineer, his superiors and politicians.
Officials said he had purchased properties in the name of his relatives and even friends and that they had initiated an inquiry to dig out more details on these names. The ACB has also sought Chikhlikar's salary statement from his department. "The properties he owns were found in places where he has served as a PWD engineer. We have found their details on paper but will now visit these sites for verification. We will also check if he has more properties," Mahavarkar said. He added, "Chikhlikar has many files of Income Tax returns. So, if it is not black money, we are investigating how he could amass such huge assets."
Of the 78 personal files the ACB officials recovered, 38 had income tax documents, two had his vehicle papers and six had his insurance documents. There was another file of his fixed deposits, one each of house tax and water tax and also his will. The remaining files had property papers.
The interrogation of both the engineers continued at the ACB office all day on Monday. Sources said the interrogation of the two revolved around the money amassed by them.
The ACB had had caught Chikhlikar accepting a bribe of Rs 22,000 on April 30. The sectional engineer of the division, Jagdish Wagh was caught taking the bribe and handing it over to Chikhlikar. The two suspended engineers are in police custody till May 10.
Mahavarkar said his department had rarely got any complaints against the PWD department and this was one of the biggest cases pertaining to the department in the last decade. The PWD officials washed their hands of the whole affair. "The office comes into picture only if the works to be sanctioned are beyond the powers of executive engineer, or in the event of conducting inspections, visits etc. That is a routine job and it is done fairly," said P Y Deshmukh, superintending engineer, Nashik circle.
