| 1984 Sikh riots victim Nirpreet’s fast against Sajjan Kumar enters fifth day | | | Chandigarh: Though her blood pressure is down and her health is deteriorating, Nirpreet Kaur, a victim of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, says her fast against Sajjan Kumar will continue. Kaur has been fasting for five days now. An IBN-Live report quoted her as saying that her fast would continue until the government fulfills her demand for a through investigation in the riots cases as well as action against Sajjan Kumar. Meanwhile the CBI has said that it will challenge Kumar’s acquittal in before the Delhi High Court as it has found “strong grounds” which could form the basis of its petition. CBI sources said in New Delhi on Thursday that the agency is likely to wait till the court pronounces its verdict on the quantum of sentence for those found guilty in the case. The Aam Aadmi Party is also supporting Kaur’s protest agaisnt Kumar’s acquittal. IBN-Live reported that the matter echoed in Parliament with the Akali Dal alleging that the party had sent a letter to the Prime Minister on the issue but had not received any reply. Akali Dal and BJP leaders will meet president Pranab Mukherjee on 8 May and raise the issue of Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal. Kumar, a former Lok Sabha MP from Outer Delhi who was refused a Congress ticket for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, still faces trial in another 1984 rioting case. In a third case, the Delhi Police have filed a closure report, saying there is no evidence against Kumar to implicate him. CBI sources said the agency’s legal department has studied the judgement and highlighted several strong grounds on the basis of which it is likely to approach the Delhi High Court challenging the acquittal of Kumar. His acquittal has led to protests by Sikh outfits in the national capital and in parts of Punjab. They said the CBI would approach the Law Ministry seeking its approval for initiation of the process of appeal in the high court to challenge the verdict. |
