Agriculture Department organizes Demonstration on Mat Nursery Raising of Paddy

CHINORE, May 11 : As a step towards popularization of latest and advanced machinery in the Agriculture sector, a Demonstration cum Training programme on raising of Mat Nursery of Paddy to be transplanted by the Paddy Transplanter. The innovative transplanting machine recently introduced by the Department of Agriculture, was organized at Seed Multiplication Farm Chinore by the Farmers Training Centre, Directorate of Agriculture Jammu. More than 50 progressive farmers and officers from rice growing areas of Jammu and Samba District participated in the training programme.
Joint Director Agriculture Inputs Sh Sushil Sahni, while interacting with the farmers said that the main aim of the Department is to reduce labour and drudgery in agriculture to make it a profitable profession which can only be done by introduction of latest and advanced equipments and machinery like Rotavators, Paddy transplanters, laser levelers, Reaper cum binders, Potato planters, Bailers etc. He added that the introduction of such machinery will also help to attract our unemployed youth to adopt agriculture as a profession which will help in reducing the unemployment and further sustain this most important sector. He said that the paddy transplanter can transplant an area of one acre in one hour using 2.5 litres of diesel costing about Rs 125 per acre against a labour component of Rs1500 per acre to be transplanted in one day thus saving the money and time. He stated that the paddy transplanter can plant 30-32 seedlings per sq. mt. as against 10-12 seedlings per sq. mtr. by the labour thus maintaining the plant population resulting in increase in production to one and half time more. He also disclosed that the paddy transplanter can transplant the seedlings of 16-20 days of age which helps to develop the root system of the plants leading to increase in production whereas the labour can transplant the matured seedlings of 28-30 days of age only.
Chief agriculture Officer Jammu, Jatinder Sharma also spoke about the process of Mat nursery raising. He said that this nursery will help in increasing the production of Rice by two times because of proper spacing and maintaining proper plant population and also by transplanting the early mature seedlings of 20-22 days after sowing. He impressed upon the farmers who are using the paddy transplanter in their fields to come up with the suggestions for further improvement and modification in local conditions for its efficient use to be taken up with the manufacturing companies. Manager S M Farm Chinore Sh Onkar Singh Choudhary and Manager SM Farm Bakore Sh Ram Pal gave the practical demonstration of Mat Nursery raising by using the frames to be put on the soil spread over a polythene sheet, for specified chunks of Seedlings which fit on the panel of the paddy transplanter, in the beds of the size of 1.25x20 mtrs sufficient for transplanting an area of one acre. Distt. SMS Mr. Thaploo, SDAO Marh and RS PURA, AEOs, JAEOs and field officers of Jammu and Samba districts also participated in the training programme.
