| Infiltration bid foiled in Keran sector; 5 militants killed: Army | | Trooper killed, 2 others injured in Uri gunfight | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 9 : Army on Tuesday claimed to have killed five militants after foiling a major infiltration bid on Line of Control (LoC) in Keran Sector in north Kashmir's Kupwara district while as a soldier was killed and two others were injured in another gunfight at Uri in Baramulla district today. Official sources told Global News Service that soldiers of 4 Kumavo regiment this morning foiled the bid in near Ustad Post in Keran sector. Sources said that soldiers spotted a group of heavily armed militants who were trying to sneak into this side. "Militants opened fire which was retaliated triggering an encounter which continued for some time," they said, adding that five intruders were killed. Soon after the exchange of fire, additional reinforcement was sent to area and searches are on, sources added. Srinagar based Defense Spokesman told GNS that a group of eight to nine militants were spotted by soldiers at Line of Control (LoC) near Ustad post in Keran Sector. He said that militants were asked to surrender; however, they opened fire on the soldiers. "The fire was retaliated triggering an encounter in the ensuing gunfight in which five militants were killed," he said, adding that at least four militants managed to move back. However, the spokesman said that we are not able to recover the bodies of these militants due to presence of landmines in the said area. A senior police official while talking to GNS said that a brief exchange of fire between troops and militants was reported in Keran Sector, Kupwara. He said that neither the weapons nor the bodies of militants have been recovered so far. Official sources said that a soldier of 7 JAK Rifles identified as Yama Bahadur was killed and two others were injured in an encounter near Tip Post at Uri in Baramulla district. Meanwhile, troops launched a massive combing operation in the area to flush out militants. |
