| It's official only! I-day function failed to attract commoner's eye in Jammu | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 17: Independence Day function in Jammu was anything but peoples' function. It was reduced to just an official function, with rather compulsory participation of some schools and also forces. It was after long time that people didn't participate in Independence function in Jammu, which has been the hot bed of nationalism and pluralism in the state. People voluntarily boycotted I-Day to protest against the violence in Kishtwar which left three people dead and also against the collapse of district administration in controlling it. People had earlier boycotted I-Day during 2008 Amarnath Land row, which had polarized the state along regional and religious lines. This time Kishtwar district has been polarized, courtesy district administration, and where minority community is still living in fear. The protest of Jammu for not participating in I-Day was also to show sympathy with the minorities of the Kishtwar district. "I have been regularly attending I-Day function. It is after 2008 that I decided not to attend the function to register my protest," said Anil Sharma, a resident of Jammu. The boycott was also to register the protest of Jammu leadership which failed to assert timely and was active only when the senior national leadership took notice of it and the situation was discussed in Parliament. "Situation started deserving attention when it appeared in media and was hotly debated in Parliament. It was only then that Sajjad Kitchloo was sacked. If the Government would have been sensitive, then it should have taken these steps at the first go," said Ruchi Sharma. I-Day is marked to celebrate the nation and its progress. The nation includes states also, and if the people of state are not participating in such an important function then it shows that State Government has lost faith of the people. |
