Demand of 'disbanding VDCs' conspiracy against nationalistic forces: Jugal

JAMMU, Aug 20: Launching a scathing attack on those who are making hue and cry over the role and relevance of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) besides seeking their disbanding, the state Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) chief and MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma termed the demand as a well hatched conspiracy to weaken the nationalist forces.
Speaking exclusively to Early Times, the BJP president Jugal Kishore said that separatists and few political groups are making false propaganda about the VDCs and their functioning adding that that any attempt to disband the VDCs could have dangerous consequences.
"Demand of disbanding VDCs is a well planned conspiracy of those who have nefarious designs…A word is being deliberately spread by some vested interests over the relevance of VDCs and their disbanding…This is an attempt to create a fear psychosis among minorities and to force them to desert the hills of Jammu region," Jugal Kishore said. Senior BJP leader while hailing VDCs for a highly commendable role played by them in countering the insurgency operations since their constitution said that they have contributed significantly in ensuring an environment of safety and security particularly in hilly and remote areas of the state.
"It was the valiant sacrifices of VDCs due to which the minorities in hilly and remote areas felt secure during the times when militancy in the state particularly in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri was at its peak," BJP Chief said.
"The VDCs infused self-confidence among the people of hilly districts where the militants were enjoying field day in mid nineties… The presence of VDCs played a very vital role in the militancy infested areas of erstwhile Doda district and parts of Rajouri and Poonch … It was them (VDCs) which motivated the people particularly minorities to stay put in the hilly areas," he added.
Mocking at the claims of those who are saying that there is overall normalcy and peace in the state as such the VDCs should be disbanded, the BJP leader challenged them and said if this is a reality then the security of the protected people should be withdrawn. "If they (those opposing VDCs) think that there is complete calm and peace is prevailing in the state and continuation of VDCs is not needed then why to waste crores of rupees in protecting the politicians, bureaucrats and senior police officers… The security guards at the VIP residences and PSOs provided to privileged class should be withdrawn at once," Jugal Kishore maintained BJP president further said that dissolution of VDCs could fritter away the gains of last 20 years and could result in revival of militancy in the state particularly in mountainous districts of Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch.
