| Srinagar all set to host national level rugby tournament | | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Aug 20: The summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir is all set to play host to the national 7 a side rugby tournament. The three day championship would get underway on August 23 and the finals would be played on August 25 at the Bakshi Stadium. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Nasser Hussain, Captain Indian Rugby Team said that it would be for the first time that Srinagar would host the national level 7 a side rugby tournament. He exuded confidence that more such tournaments would be held at Srinagar in the coming years. "Twenty teams with most of them comprising the state teams would be taking part in the national championship. The national level tournament holds an important place in the overall itinerary of the rugby events in India. It is expected that the championship would be a success and more such tournaments would be held at Srinagar in future," said Nasser. The Captain of Indian Rugby team said that Srinagar would also organize an orientation and training course for the physical education teachers of Jammu & Kashmir on August 21. He said that more than 100 sports teachers along with the Rugby coaches of the state would take part in the one day affair. "On August 22 the international rugby course namely Rugby Ready IRB Level 1 will be organized at the Bakshi stadium. The course is specifically meant for the senior national players and trainers of the rugby. More than 100 outstanding rugby players will take part in the coaching and training camp," said Nasser. He said that a special half day workshop for the physiotherapists under the supervision of Aijaz Ashai, head physio of Indian Rugby team would also be held on August 22. He expressed confidence that Bakshi stadium would be a perfect venue for the national championship as well as other allied activities being organized from August 21-25. Sharing his views on this occasion, Irfan Aziz, General Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir Rugby Association (JKRA) said that all arrangements have been made for the successful holding of the championship. Irfan said that 300 players and officials are going to take part in the national level tournament "The national championship may turn out to be a great experience for the players of Jammu & Kashmir. Thirty young rugby players of the state are sweating it hard and practicing hard for the championship for the last two months. We hope that the state team would put up a good show during the tournament and feel all of us proud," said Irfan. |
