| NYC volunteers hold protest, demand regularization | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Oct 15 : Demanding a comprehensive policy for their regularization, National Youth Corps volunteers of Kathua district today held a protest demonstration at Shaheed Bhagat Singh park. NYC volunteers led by their district president, Ashiq Ali raised slogans against the state government and demanded early settlement of their demands. "We have been demanding regularization from the state government since long as the future of 8000 NYC youth is at stake. Many of us are getting over aged and as such have no other option", they said. Speaking on the occasion, Ashiq Ali said that a memorandum of their demands has also been sent to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, urging him to personally interfere into the matter for early redressal of their grievances. He said that in the memorandum to PM, they have demanded formulation of a comprehensive policy for NYC volunteers who have been serving in different government departments for the past over two years. He further said that a total number of 8200 volunteers in Jammu and Kashmir, engaged by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), an ancillary wing of Union Ministry of Youth Affairs after 2010 unrest are going to be disengaged shortly. Out of the 8200 volunteers, 7700 were kept at the disposal of various departments of the state government and the rest 500 volunteers were kept at the disposal of District Coordinators of Youth Affairs in J&K. The volunteers were being paid an honorarium of Rs 2500 (Rupees two thousand five hundred only) per month (inclusive of TA) for their period of engagement, up to a maximum of two years (including the period of training of 4 weeks) for identified development activities. Surprisingly, on one hand the government is talking of disengage on the other hand the state government is having their services regularly but had not paid the honorarium for last one year. "In short we just want the government to continue our services," he said. Later the volunteers submitted a memorandum to DC in support of their demands. |
