| Wailing over death of their young son, Family faces brutality of Police, hospital security staff | | | Avinash Azad
Jammu, Oct 15 : The pain and agony of a poor family that lost their 19 year old son allegedly due to medical negligence at the GMC hospital here were redoubled by insensitive police and hospital watch and ward staff when they physically assaulted members of the family wailing over the death of their young son. "May God's wrath fall upon them" yelled Vaiso Devi, the broken mother of the deceased complaining negligence of the doctors and brutality of the security staff who forcibly drove the family out of the emergency where their son breathed his last. Narrating the tale of her woes, Vaiso told that for the last three days, they were at GMC to get their elder son Vinod treated for jaundice, whom doctors declared to be out of danger Monday evening. "Today morning, Vinod's condition deteriorated; We approached doctors but they made excuses. Finally after one hour they arrived and after few minutes they declared our son dead" Vaiso Devi said, wailing inconsolably. Belonging to a BPL family, Vinod a student of BA Ist year, was also doing some menial jobs to shoulder responsibility of his labourer father. Inspite of the fact that free medicines and treatment for BPL families is made available at government hospitals, this hapless family had to arrange Rs. 22000/- from relatives to purchase medicines.Broken by death of their child, the parents and relatives carrying body of Vinod had to face wrath of police and hospital security guards who brutally thrashed the wailing family members. They also staged protest outside New Emergency block, demanding probe over the death, but were manhandled by large number of policemen from GMC police post. The police also used force against the bereaved family. "A woman received major injuries after she fell on window pane following thrashing by police cops", the family members said, adding that, they didn't damage hospital property as the police and hospital management has been alleging. "Police also arrested my uncle Bansi Lal and released him after arrival of media persons", said Mukesh brother of the deceased. He further said that due to absence of senior doctors at Emergency ward the junior doctors were not able to diagnose the patients. He demanded definite measures to avoid deaths of innocent people due to doctors' negligence. It is pertinent to mention here that in many cases where people died allegedly due negligence of doctors, the hospital authorities ordered inquires, but paradoxically, so far no one was found guilty on the part of hospital. All the enquiries have been proved biased as same were conducted by the doctors to cover-up the wrongdoing of their own colleagues. |
