| Despite 2 surgeons, most surgeries referred to GMC Jammu | | DH Rajouri turns into a referral centre | | Akshay Azad Jammu, Oct 15: Surgeons posted in the District hospital Rajouri seem to have lost their scalpels as they have relegated the hospital to a mere referral unit by referring majority of cases to the GMC hospital in Jammu despite available staff and infrastructure at their disposal. Sources informed Early Times that it has become a routine at District Hospital Rajouri that majority of patients, who were recommended surgeries, even minor ones have been referred to GMC&H. "Along with separate Surgeon of ENT, Eye, Ortho and Gynae, two more surgeons are deputed at district hospital Rajouri, but for the last many months, less than a dozen surgeries have been performed by two general surgeons, while scores of patients were referred to GMC", a doctor pleading anonymity said. He further informed that majority of patients, who visited government hospital belonging to economically weaker sections, who could not afford to visit Jammu and could be found pleading to doctors for performing surgeries, but their pleas are coldly ignored. "Whenever we ask for conducting surgeries, the doctors argue that there is only one Anesthesist, due to which majority of patients have been referred, but as per official records four Anesthesist have been deputed in the hospital", he said. An official seeking anonymity said that it has become a general practice of district hospitals that they forward all cases to GMC Jammu, overburdening the same. "Many a times, patients recommended surgeries, including emergency cases, succumb before reaching GMC. Majority of these lives could have been saved if minor surgeries were conducted at district hospitals", he said. Medical Superintendent, Arun Sharma while admitting the fact, said that though four Anesthesist were deputed but only one was working as others had not joined. "Due to only Anesthesist, the general surgeries in the hospital have been affected but now another Anesthesist has joined. Now the number of surgeries undertaken here will increase in coming days", he maintained. |
