| Bovine smugglers V/s Police: Seven cops injured, 71 smugglers held | | | Et Report Rajouri, Nov 14: About seven policemen were injured when some alleged bovine smugglers attacked Thanamandi Police Station at about 1.20am on Wednesday after police foiled a major bid to smuggle over 200 animals to Kashmir valley loaded in more than 40 vehicles on the other day. Meantime police in day long raids have arrested 71 bovine smugglers. Reliable sources said that the trouble started when smugglers informed the policemen that they had reportedly paid between Rs80000-Rs1 lakh to the agents of police for safe crossing under the jurisdiction of Thanamandi police station and sought clear passage to valley. "The tiff began, the police sources said, "while police remained adamant to book the smugglers while they (smugglers) sought their safe passage towards valley.' When police didn't allow bovine smugglers the heated arguments between the two sides took ugly turn when bovine smugglers started pelting stones on the police station and policemen. The ding-dong battle continued for over one hour, police sources said adding, " then smugglers taking advetage of darkness escaped towards Poonch district along with vehicles. "Saheen Mirza, SHO Thanamndi immediately contacted senior police officers at Surankote (Poonch) and requested to intercept the vehicles and smugglers. "Following the flash of message police intercepted about 38 vehicles between Bafliaz and Sailan on Mughal road in the wee hours of Thursday and apprehended about 55 smugglers and drivers along with more than 230 bovines, police said All the smugglers and drivers have been booked under sections 353, 382, 332, 147,148and 148 RPC and 3PCA at Thanamandi and Surankote Police Stations. Meanwhile 16 more alleged smugglers from Rajouri along with 10 vehicles were brought by SHO to Thanamandi Police Station for further action and investigation as they have leveled allegation of bribe against some agents/policemen from Thanamndi. About 5-7 policemen have been reportedly injured in the stone pelting at Police Station Thanamndi by the bovine smugglers, police sources said. Police said the bovine smugglers booked by Thanamandi police have been identified as Mohd Sajjad, Safeer (both resident of Ghambir Muglan), Manzoor Ahemed , Nisar Ahemad, Mohd Sheeraz and Omar Farooq (residents of village Rajdhani), Mehmood of Nadyala, Tahir Ahmed, Mohd Alam, Mohd Shabir, Ishtiyaq Ahemad and Shafiq Ahmed (all residents of Behrot) Aftab of Dharam Shal, Sheeraz and Sheeraz Iqbal (Both from Khablan) and Mohd Jammel of Majhoor. Police have also brought 10 mobile vehicles along with about 56 bovines. Meanwhile senior police officers have instructed the their cadre to probe the matter and break the alleged nexus between smugglers, agents and some black moles within policemen. |
