| Batwal Association hails GoI's action | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 15: The Jammu and Kashmir Batwal Welfare Association has hailed the action taken by the Government of India in having approved amendments to the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which will give it more teeth by expanding its scope and providing for harsher punishment. At a meeting held here today, the Association members apprised their community people about the amendments effected by the Government of India in the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act that seek to strengthen certain existing provisions as also add new offences against SCs and STs so far not part of 1989 Act. Obstructing use of common resources such as wells, grounds and socially and economically boycotting SCs and STs have been included in the list of offences and also preventing SCs and STs from filing nominations for elections would now be treated as a separate crime, Association members told the community people. Also, now the victims and witnesses will not confront hurdles at any stage of legal process-from registration, investigation and charge sheeting, to the trial stage, the Association members added. |
