| When is the best time for dialogue with Pakistan or separatists? | | | ET Report JAMMU, Nov 15: Kashmiri separatist leader, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq has again indicated readiness to a dialogue engagement with the Centre provided the same is held on the lines of Vajpayee-separatists dialogue during the NDA rule. What Atal Bihari Vajpayee said during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India is that dialogue can be held with anybody within the contours of 'Insaniyat' (Humanity). Nobody can dispute that democracies as nation states have chosen to become in the modern times, cannot say no to a dialogue even if the same is to be held with the nation's sworn enemies. Wars and belligerence are no alternative to peace and dialogue. Any way forward in India-Pakistan relationship can only be achieved through peaceful and negotiated dialogue. But this has to be realized by those who have made violence and bloodshed their political pastime. How can violence, ceasefire violations, border shelling of unarmed, peaceful villagers, killing of political rivals and intimidation of law abiding citizens and the quest for peace and dignity go together? "Insaniyat Kay Diaray Mein" is what Vajpayee had said when asked whether the Centre would invite Kashmiri separatist leadership to a dialogue. While any dialogue within the limits of humanity is always welcome, it must not be forgotten than 'Insaniyat' has to be on both the sides. One side cannot go on shooting our citizens and the other side cannot go on offering a dialogue within the limits of humanity to either Pakistan or its supporters among Kashmiri separatist leaders. India's resilience lies in its softness, but when softness is interpreted as weakness in international forums, no country worth its dignity can continue to be soft towards its enemies. An iron fist is not the right answer to international problems in modern times. Yet, countries those have dealt with divisive and anti-national forces with an iron fist have survived and prospered during recent times. Did not countries like Algeria and Egypt intervene militarily when hardlines and fundamentalists assumed political power in these countries? Did not China intervene militarily when a revolution of sorts was brewing in Beijing? Countries or homes whose doors remain unguarded are invaded and overpowered by its enemies. Dialogue between India and Pakistan is the need of the hour, but did our Prime Minister earn respect in the eyes of the common Indian when he met his counter part in New York as Pakistan troops kept on shelling and pounding our troops and villages on the International Border in Jammu? Dialogue with Pakistan from a position of strength--Yes. Dialogue while our troops are attacked, civilians are killed and separatists are invited to parties and dinners-- No. |
