| Temple Bill faces 'inevitable' fate, likely to be shelved 'for now' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 15: Much hyped Hindu Shrines Bill has faced the inevitable fate , all thanks to the ever elusive commitments of NC led coalition Government which has played similar political games with many a such matters where it did not mean 'business'. Having faced the course of a moving ball in the field , the ball which finally lay in the hands of the Select Committee is in all probability to remain stand still as there are no chances of the Bill being taken up for passage under the present dispensation which has been tossing it up for its entire tenure. Sources said the bill which stands unmoved from the position where it stood when it was introduced in the Lower House in all likelihood would be shelved for now. Without saying so formally, those at the helm have indicated that since all the political parties are now engaged in their own poll preparations, passage of this Bill which has indeed some political implications will not be the priority of the Government during the next session of legislature, sometime being convened in the month of February. As it raised some political dust during the course of discussions in the meetings convened by the Select Committee ahead of Autumn session of Assembly in Srinagar in August this year, the panel which has members from political parties on board has now given to understand that in the wake of the controversies some quarters so tried to create by raising 'uncalled for' objections and putting resistance to the incorporation of some shrines and Trusts under the bill, the committee has not been able to take final decision nor has it been able to prepare the report, sources said quoting some members as attributing the reason to the inability of submitting the report before the House. Most of the members in the panel however know that this resistance was put up in order to preempt passage of the bill which was all set to get through otherwise. Sources further said all this confusion was created in a somewhat tacit manner , albeit with connivance of some political parties and political heavy weights who are invisible hurdles in the getting this law formulated for protection of their own vested interests. It has been principally agreed by the coalition partners, that Bill be shelved and there will be hurrying through in the next budget session, sources said. Pertinently, the Select Committee was set up by the State Assembly during the last Budget session and it held thorough deliberations for over three months with a view to remove some misconceptions and dispel some apprehensions on certain provisions which were objected to by members of ruling National Conference. However, these discussions ended up in creating confusions rather than clearing them up. |
