| New Delhi not in hurry to resume talks with Hurriyat leaders | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Nov 15 : New Delhi is said to be in no hurry in responding to APHC Chairman, Molvi Umar Farooq's demand for resumption of Hurriyat-Centre dialogue. Official sources said that despite the fact that Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had repeatedly invited separatists for talks there was no response from them all these years. Instead these separatists found time in traveling to New Delhi for a session with Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif's adviser, Sartaj Aziz. What has peeved New Delhi is the way some separatist leaders requested the Pakistani leader to support their demand for holding a plebiscite for settling the Kashmir issue. At the same time New Delhi may reconsider its decision on resuming talks with moderate elements among the separatists because hardliners have started campaigning for poll boycott and for giving teeth to the ongoing liberation struggle. Reports said that moderates among the separatists, headed by Molvi Umar Farooq, have shown keen interest in seeking talks with Delhi getting resumed after a gap of seven years since 2006 separatist-centre talks have been suspended. A week after Kashmir separatists met Pakistan Prime Minister's Advisor Sartaj Aziz in New Delhi, Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said there is a scope for dialogue with Government of India (GoI). The Hurriyat leader asked for revisiting Vajpayee-type dialogue process on Kashmir in which the former Prime Minister had emphasized on resolving the dispute "within the ambit of humanity." "If Vajpayee-type dialogue is revisited, then there is scope for talks," Mirwaiz has said adding that "Hurriyat Conference is committed to any dialogue aiming at resolving the vexed Kashmir issue," he said. The Hurriyat (M) Chairman said there were two possible ways to find a solution to Kashmir problem. "Either the UN resolutions should be implemented in letter and spirit, or a triangular dialogue should be started," he said. "We are in favour of peace in the region and welcome any move for resolving Kashmir issue," the Mirwaiz said. The senior separatist leader said there is need to implement the demands that Hurriyat (M) had raised with Atal Bihari Vajpayee during their talks, and asked for making a progress on them. "We had demanded revocation of AFSPA, demilitarization and release of political prisoners," Official sources said that since the Lok Sabha poll was to be held next year the Congress led UPA Government may not take the risk of resuming talks with Kashmiri separatists which could trigger some political controversy against the Congress.(KIP) |
