Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 15: Traffic remained disrupted at Janipur chowk for hours as the family members of deceased PHE Daily wager Naresh Gupta blocked the road in protest, alleging that the Junior Engineer (JE) had stopped his salary for one year and had been threatening him. Thousands of vehicles were struck on either side of the Janipur Chowk, which connects outskirts with the main City. Protesters placed the dead body of deceased on the road and refused to cremate it till action was taken against Deepak Gupta, JE, Public Health Engineering (PHE) for threatening the deceased. Family was also demanding compensation and job to his wife. Ajay Gupta, cousin of deceased informed, "A day before Diwali, on November 2, the said JE threatened to dismiss him from the job, when Naresh asked him to release his salary." "After coming back home Naresh was feeling uneasy, we rushed him to hospital and after few days, doctors refered him to Ludhiana, where he died on Thursday. He must have died due to shock after the threat of the JE," he alleged. Naresh Gupta was working in the Department for the last six years as Daily wager. At present he was getting Rs.3700 as salary, which is pending for the last 18 months. It was only after the intervention of Sunil Gupta, Superintending Engineer (SE) PHE and police officials who reached the spot and pacified the protesters that they shifted from bridge allowing movement of traffic.
J K Sharma, Executive Engineer, PHE said, "The SE has given a written assurance accepting their demands, that the department will provide job to his wife, pending wages will be cleared and all the medical expenses incurred at Ludhiana for his treatment will be reimbursed." "There was no issue of harassing him, all the daily wagers were paid one month salary on Diwali but they were asking for two month salary, so the JE was asked to mobilize them, the allegation of threatening is wrong," he added.
