| Training programme on "School Disaster Preparedness" in progress | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 15: Disaster Management Centre University of Jammu and the Office of Divisional Commissioner, Jammu is jointly organizing a two days' training programme on "School Disaster Preparedness" from 15th to 16th November, 2013. The vision of the training programme is to promote culture of disaster preparedness in the schools. More than 250 school teachers drawn from all the ten districts of Jammu province and the major public schools of Jammu city are participating in the training programme. Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Minister of State for Revenue, Relief & Rehabilitation (Independent charge) was chief guest at the inaugural function. While appreciating the initiative for organizing training for teachers on disaster preparedness he emphasized the need for awareness among common masses and people living in far off places. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu in his presidential address said "Earthquakes doesn't kill, buildings do", thus it becomes imperative to be proactive in disaster preparedness rather than post disaster management in order to make the society safe against the disasters. Prof. Ishar emphasised on the fact that apart from proper training and awareness among general masses, availability of technology, adequate training and communication play a key and critical role in minimizing the adverse affect of natural disasters. He offered the services of University Academia to help government agencies in formulating plans for preparing Disaster Management Schemes. Guest of Honour at the inauguration function Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad, Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Govt. of India stressed the need for preparation of Disaster Preparedness and Response Plans at individual school level to ensure that the children are in a better position to respond effectively or to tackle any emergency within the school environment. He stressed the need for capacity building of officials, teachers and students by conducting trainings, mock drills and awareness programmes in schools. Earlier in his welcome address Shantmanu, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu elaborated the need of reducing structural vulnerability of the school buildings which is often the root cause of death and injury of school children. He discussed various steps that are being taken by the administration in disaster preparedness and management in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.Vote of thanks was presented by Prof. S. K. Pandita, Director, Disaster Management Centre, University of Jammu. Vandana Chauhan and Vishal Pathak from All India Disaster Mitigation Institute, Ahmedabad, Dr. G. M. Dar, IMPA, J&K, Dr. Ranbushan from Directorate of Health Services, Jammu and Prof. S. K. Pandita, Director, DMC, University of Jammu are the resource persons for the training programme. Fire and Emergency Services, Jammu shall conduct a mock drill on 16th November for the participants. Among others Dr Bindra Thusoo, Jaikumar Sharma, Special secretary to Vice-Chancellor, Dr.Yudhvir Singh, Assistant Dean (SW), Dr.A R Manhas, Assistant Dean (SW) and Imran Farooq, PRO were also present on the occasion. |
