NC moving close to BJP, ignores Congress
12/7/2013 11:45:24 PM

Mustansir
Srinagar, Dec 7: A senior Congress leader from Kashmir who accused National Conference of 'backstabbing and breach of coalition dharma' would not have even dreamt of his statement proving correct, however, the events unfolded since December1 when BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi addressed a mammoth rally in Jammu, suggest that the National Conference has reached some secret deal with the rightwing party.
The latest developments at the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir suggest National Conference leadership being conscious of the fact that chances of Congress forming the next government at centre being very bleak, is looking at reviving the working relationship with the BJP which according to observers is likely to head the next government in 2014 at centre.
While corroborating the view that NC is looking for friends in estranged BJP, a senior bureaucrat told Early Times on Saturday that the agenda for Modi's speech at Lalkar rally was set by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah when a couple of days before the rally he (Omar) illustrated what the BJP leader was going to speak.
Picking up the threads from their, a senior Kashmir based journalist said that CM's speech at Nagrota followed by Modi's speech at MA Stadium and then CM stating that he was not CM because of Rahul Ghandi followed by the announcement of candidates for three Kashmir Loke Sabha seats by NC president, Dr. Farooq Abdulla and finally NC leaders supporting four-point formula of General Pervez Musharaf clearly suggest that the Kashmir's oldest political party has shifted its focus from Congress to BJP at centre.
He said that NC leadership is well informed that there is a growing perception among people in Kashmir that Congress is more dangerous that the right wing BJP and rated Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the best Prime Minister and appreciate the serious but sincere efforts made by him to address the contentious issues. As such, he said, the NC sees no immediate harm in joining hands with Modi.
A senior bureaucrat in state administration further lent credibility to this statement by saying, the NC president, Dr. Farooq Abdullah was in close touch with BJP leadership particularly leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley and other leaders to revive the relationship with the estranged friends in that party.
He said that the Congress has for the first time since 2008 taken a backseat and that it was no more in dictating position nor does it has the bargaining power, at least by now.
"Situation has changed fast, NC is in driving seat now and Congress has taken back seat, Farooq is playing the cards very smartly and he played it again by announcing the candidates for three Kashhmir seats without consulting congress with whom he and his son is sharing power both at centre and in the state. He said a week congress and strong BJP is always good for NC.
Pertinently a congress leader from Kashmir had on Thursday said, "the NC has proved that it is habitual of back stabbing. In past it ditched us saying that Hassan Khan is an independent candidate in Kargil and later NC owned him in Kargil Hill Council elections. Now, NC announced its three nominations for the upcoming parliamentary polls today reaffirming our stand that NC has been playing foul with us".
"There is a coordination committee of the two coalition partners where the NC could have at least discussed about these nominations prior to today's sudden announcement," the leader had added.
"We feel offended because they have not consulted us prior to these nominations. At least it was a moral responsibility of NC to inform us before taking such a serious decision. This is totally unethical and against the coalition dharma," he had said.
