| Sheikh Ashiq elected new President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry | | 18 other members elected to Executive Committee | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Dec 7: Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad was today elected as new President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I). Besides Ashiq, 18 members were also elected to the Executive Committee of KCC&I. Ashiq was elected following the results announced during the 79th Annual General Meeting of KCC&I held here. Ashiq replaces Abdul Hamid Punjabi who demitted his office today. Mushtaq Ahmad Wani was elected as the Senior Vice-President of KCC&I while as Javed Ahmad Bhat (Tenga) was elected as the Junior Vice-President. While Syed Musadiq Shah would be the new Secretary General of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Faiz Ahmad Bakshi was elected as Joint Secretary General. Dr. Gazalla Amin was elected as the new treasurer of the chamber. The newly elected office bearers thanked the members for reposing trust in them and electing them to the important positions in the chamber. Besides Ashiq, Mushtaq, Javed, Musadiq, Faiz and Dr. Gazalla, 13 other members were elected to the Executive Committee of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry. These members are Altaf Ahmad Tramboo, Mauzam Bakshi, Nazir Ahmad Wani, Ashfaq Siddiq Dug, Fayaz Ahmad Punjabi, Muzaffar Majid Jan, Sheikh Zahoor Ahmad, Prof. A. R. Khan, Gowhar Maqbool, Nasir Hamid Khan, Parvez Ahmad Naqash, Ghulam Rasool Siah and Parvez Ahmad Bhat. Later interacting with a group of selected journalists, the newly elected President of KCC&I said that the new team would take up the construction of Chamber House at Rajbagh vigorously. He said the land has already been acquired for this purpose adding that the construction on the Chamber House could not be taken up so far. "We would also pitch for Cross Line of Control (LoC) tourism so that people from across border can come and visit places of religious importance like Hazratbal and Charar-e-Sharief. If people from across the globe and can visit these places why are people of state living on other side of LoC being denied this opportunity," said Ashiq. The KCC&I President would take every step to ensure that the problems and difficulties being faced by general traders are put up in right perspective so that just solution is found out to the same. He said that newly elected office bearers would visit the members who have over the past few years expressed disappointment over the functioning of the chamber. He asked the members of trade who are not members of chamber to come and project their demands as well as suggestions before newly elected team. It would be in place to mention here that polls for electing the executive committee of KCC&I were held on November 30. Less than half of the members of the chamber cast their votes during the elections. Out of the total number of 1004 votes, 469 votes were polled. The overall voting percentage during the elections stood at 46.81 percent. A Polling Sub-Committee consisting of Rauf Ahmad Punjabi and Ghulam Mohammad Dug was formed to conduct the election process. Two scrutinizers, Director Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) and representative of Jammu & Kashmir Bank were also present during the elections. |
