JAMMU, Dec 7: As a part of security measures, Jammu Police have erected a number of nakas in different parts of the city for keeping a strict vigil on anti-social as well as anti-national elements and to scuttle their nefarious designs it undertake routine checking of vehicles but at times inattention turns these security step a 'bottle neck' chocking the streamlined traffic. The provision of tight security grid in a city like Jammu is immensely necessary for the safety of its citizens, however, sometimes it become a source of unnecessary harassment and nuisance for the commoners. But majority feels that lack of civic sense among driver turns a streamlined traffic 'naka' into a bottle neck be it anywhere across the city as many drivers shunting out of lane driving go out of lane getting undue attention of security men on naka. Some of the commuters including Early Times scribe on Saturday evening while passing through Gujjar Nagar Bridge went through a similar agony as they were forced to cover a distance of about 50 metres in more than half an hour in the name of security. The frantic checking of each and every mode of transport led to a chaotic situation as the vehicles moved at a snail's pace with the result the traffic virtually came to a standstill. This scribe, who was travelling in the vehicle with one of his ailing relatives, reached from one end to another (Gujjar Nagar Chowk) in about 35 minutes as the policemen were busy in frisking every single vehicle. The ailing patient accompanying this reporter was screaming in pain but there was no way out as their car was stuck in a long queue of vehicles. This scribe's relative was in severe pain and feeling helpless he could not do anything except cursing the traffic snarl. A motorbike rider along with his family including two children also experienced the trauma of trapped in the traffic snarl as his kids started crying after seeing a serpentine row of vehicles on the bridge. A commuter said, "This is a routine affair since I faced such situations in the past also particularly for the last 20 days without any break." "So much of traffic on one particular moment on the bridge is also dangerous for the safety of the bridge as it cannot withhold such huge weight of vehicles. Each vehicle has to stay on bridge for about 30-35 minutes due to the checking," he added. When contacted Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Jammu-Kathua range, Shakeel Beig said that there is no order as such of checking and frisking each and every vehicle at Gujjar Nagar Bridge. The checking should be confined on random basis only while the traffic should flow smoothly and citizens should not face any harassment, he added. |
