10 killed, one injured in Kishtwar road mishap

Jammu, Dec 22: At least ten labourers were killed and one received injuries when a Tata Sumo they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into deep gorge in remote Kishtwar district on Sunday morning.
Sources said that the vehicle was on its way Afti Warwan to Kashmir and while reaching near Afti-Matigawran-Inshan road in Warwan area of Kishtwar, the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged into 300 feet gorge resulting 7 people died on spot while two other succumbed while shifting to nearby Afti Community Centre. The deceased have been identified as Riyaz Ahmed (18) resident of Sarkandoo Marwah , Tanveer Ahmed (19) resident of Dazbal Warwan, Sabir Ahmed resident of Dangdoro Dachhan, Mangal Singh (27) resident of Himachal Pradesh, Mudasar Ahmed (27) resident of Srinagar, Ashiq Hussain (30), Driver Shahi Jahan (38), Mohammed Yousaf (50), Mustaq Ahmed (42) all resident of Anantnag Kashmir and Muzafar Hussain son of Ghulam Rasool resident of Astangam Marwah while the injured person has been identified as Farooq Ahmed resident of Navapachi Marwah. All the deceased persons are said to be the employees and labours engaged with PMGSY. The vehicle also belongs to the PMGSY department. The cause of the accident is said to be the slippery road condition and bad weather. Sources claimed that due to heavy snow going on in the area, the injured has not been shifted either to nearest Anantnag Hospital in Kashmir or in District Hospital Kishtwar as a result of which one injured among the two died at CHC Afti. The area lacks proper road connectivity, besides there is no communications link except few satellite phones and there is also no electricity and hospital in the area having 20 to 25 thousand population. Later, large number of people from different villages of Warwan assembled at Afti and held strong protest against non availability of doctors and other essential services at Warwan. They demanded immediate posting of doctors in Warwan, beside immediate start of functioning of BSNL tower at Inshan which has been erected by the department some two year ago, but was fail to make it functional.
