| Mehbooba's Rajouri tour forced NC, Cong to re-devise strategy for coming Assembly elections | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 22: Three days whirlwind tour of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti today the border district of Rajouri has forced National Conference and Congress to re-devise their strategy for the coming Assembly elections for this mountainous belt. It is observed that border districts of Poonch and Rajouri would hold key in formation of next government in Jammu and Kashmir because division of seat is imminent in Kashmir Valley so main political players have been concentrating only on erstwhile Doda district and Poonch-Rajouri belt. Mehbooba Mufti during his tour drew impressive gatherings and she emphasized only on backwardness and under-development of this region. Instead of raising any provocative issue Mehbooba Mufti highlighted real issues confronting the people so she managed to attract minority also in this region. Earlier it was believed that minority community was either with BJP, Congress or National Conference but Mehbooba Mufti rally at Lam was an indication that minority community is gradually moving towards PDP, provided party avoid raking up provocative issues. In seven Assembly segments of Poonch and Rajouri, minority community is deciding factor so support of minority community is must. By making Yash Pal Sharma as MLC, the PDP has already given a very positive message to the minority community and party want to further carry on this message. PDP has shifted all its focus on the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri to improve its tally in the next assembly elections from Jammu province. Keeping in view the demography of these two districts, the party leadership has been trying to rope in some prominent leaders of this belt in the party so as to counter ruling National Conference (NC) and Congress. Poonch-Rajouri districts have been gradually emerging as battle ground for NC and PDP in Jammu province because both the parties have been focusing on this belt. This belt was earlier considered as citadel of NC but PDP and Congress have consolidated their positions some in this hilly region during the last two elections. Out of total seven assembly seats in this belt, NC had managed to get three and two each were shared by PDP and Congress. Interestingly, PDP has been concentrating on new assembly segments of this belt, ruling NC has also focusing on the seats which were won by the former in the last assembly elections. The ruling party has been giving more importance to the Darhal and Mendhar assembly segments represented by PDP legislators. NC leaders and ministers have been frequently visiting these two segments. |
