Early Times Report

Hiranagar, Dec 22: Locals and Civil Society activists have accused officials of the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) of Border Roads Organization (BRO) of using 'sub-standard' material in construction of the Kotepunnu-Sanji Morh road which connected several villages.
Talking to Early Times, the Sarpanch from Sanji Morh area Puran Chand and villagers from Chack Desa Chowdharian said that due to poor condition of the road the students and employees do not reach the schools and offices in time. The vehicles have been damaged badly due to road conditions. Maximum hazards happen to the houses situated along the road side. The materials used to prepare the road are not in proper ratio. The villagers demanded that the remaining contracts are goes to the private companies that they have to complete the contract as soon as possible. The several deputations had been called in this matter but the people achieved only harassments. The local demanded that higher authorities of BRO and state government must to take the action immediately.
Social activists, Bittu Mahajan Nagar Mal and Jaswant Singh said that the GREF Junior Engineers are using substandard material in connivance with the higher authorities. "They are doing so deliberately under the shelter of some influential persons and with the support of political figures as most of the JEs are blue-eyed persons. In case, the practice of using substandard material continued unchecked, the project would need to be reconstructed soon and the competent authorities are wasting billions of rupees of the national exchequer in the name of construction of road work," they said, they further alleged and complained that the GREF not only used low quality material in the construction of the road but also ignored proper slope and leveling "which is causing stagnation of water on the road which now is stinking due to lack of cleaning facilities in the area".
The social activists appealed the Defense Minister and other higher authorities to take action against officials "who are not only minting money by using substandard material but are also deceiving the government in the name of quality construction work".
They further appealed them to devise proper mechanism to check quality of material before releasing any bills and salary of JEs .They alleged that the officials are not making efforts for proper widening of road. It is high time for the state government and administration to constitute a team and book the officers who are hell bent to use low quality materiel in all works on the project", the activists said.
