| Horticulture- Nursery owners nexus cheats orchardists | | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Jan 7: The growing nexus between Private Nursery owners and Horticulture Department officers has left the Government owned horticulture nurseries and orchards spread over hundreds kanals high and dry. According to sources, Government owned Horticulture nurseries and orchards spreading over hundreds kanals of land in Kashmir valley have been deliberately turned into pastures by the Department. Sources said lakhs of apples and pear trees have been purchased since 1999 by officers of Horticulture department in Kashmir valley for distribution among the prospective orchardists. Sources said hefty sum was taken as commission by officers from nursery owners as a nexus exists between them. Sources said the orchardist were assured high quality fruit yielding trees but they were shocked to see them bearing wild fruit They said two Government owned Orchards in Ganderbal district at Ranbir Bagh and Tehsil Bagh spread over 1000 kanals of land each have been converted into pastures by the officers.They added a district officer in Ganderbal area of Horticulture department has amassed massive wealth after getting a huge commission from people by clearing wild walnut trees as high high quality trees which were taken by Government for construction of Ladakh By-Pass via Mansar-wailoo Ganderbal. The sources said from Rs one lakh to 2.50 lakh were withdrawn as compensation per walnut tree by this officer. This officer later transferred to Budgam repeated the same practice there. Meanwhile people's conference District Ganderbal coordinator and veteran Trade unionist Mir Ghulam Rasool has sought a probe against the department and action against the guilty. Mir has also appealed the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of Horticulture, Raman Bhalla to intervene and get the matter investigated fully. |
