| Geelani, Mirwaiz treading different paths | | UN Resolutions on J&K | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 7: The other day on the eve of the completion of 65 years of the UN-adopted resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir, separatists expressed themselves differently as far as their approach towards the same was concerned. In fact, APHC-M of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and and Tehrik-e-Hurriyat of Syed Ali Shah Geelani organized seminars in Srinagar on the theme on January 5, the so-called Kashmir Solidarity Day. Expressing his views on the UN-adopted resolutions, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq took on the United Nations for its failure to implement its resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir and hinted at exploring "other alternatives" for arriving at a solution to the Kashmir problem. "It is unfortunate that the world body has so far remained unsuccessful in fulfilling those responsibilities and objectives for which the UN was formed. Questions are being raised on the UN as an institution which has severely dented its credibility," Mirwaiz was quoted as saying. His faction "would always support any process aimed at finding a solution to the issue which was according to the "wishes and aspirations" of its people" was one of his major refrains. Besides questioning the UN silence over alleged human rights abuses in the militant and separatist-infested Kashmir Valley and terming its silence as "criminal", Mirwaiz also reportedly said that "though the APHC considers the UN resolutions on Kashmir as the legal foundations of the issue, other alternatives means available for resolving the issue cannot be ruled out". Mirwaiz, everyone knows, has in the past also endorsed the Musharraf's four-point formula for settling the so-called Kashmir issue. He has been saying that the Musharraf's formula could be the starting point. The Musharraf's formula talks of division of J&K into five zones, demilitarization, self-governance and porous borders. On the contrary, Geelani described the UN resolutions as the "bedrock of the Kashmir dispute" and asked Islamabad to "lobby" for organizing a plebiscite in Kashmir to ascertain the wishes of its people. "The Indo-Pak dialogue is not going to yield anything. Instead of having close relations with India, Pakistan, which enjoys the support of 57 Muslim countries, should lobby and win the support of maximum nations at the international level for holding plebiscite in Kashmir," Geelani reportedly said while speaking at the seminar "Kashmir Dispute in the historic perspective & UN Resolution of 5th January 1949" his faction organized. Geelani, unlike Mirwaiz, is critical of General Musharraf's four-point formula on Jammu & Kashmir. In fact, he has all along accused Musharraf of "diluting" the UN-adopted resolutions by what he calls his "unilateral concessions" to India over Kashmir. These are the Kashmiri leaders who are fighting for the so-called Kashmiri cause. They and other self-styled freedom fighters in Kashmir such as Yasin Malik and Shabbir Ahmad Shah have been pulling in different directions since years now. They do not even see eye to eye with each other. And they are doing it with a purpose. They know they would turn pauper and become irrelevant the moment they form one front. They do not believe in the saying "united we stand, divided we fall". They have evolved a new saying: "divided we stand, united we fall" and this is true of all or nearly all the Kashmir-based leaders. When will the people of Kashmir abandon these self-seekers who are masquerading as freedom fighters but leading a luxurious life at the cost of the common masses? |
