| NC continues 'bragging' on achievements, Congress in silent mode | | Realization on 'unfulfilled' commitments haunting party....? | | ET Report JAMMU, Jan 7: Come January and the Omar Abdullah led coalition Government tires itself for days together in highlighting the performance of coalition of the year that passed as also the 'achievements' it counts cumulatively for the years gone during which it ruled the state. January first week which marks the anniversary of the NC-Congress regime in the state makes a hammering of such progress reports in a euphoric manner till all media spaces get occupied by the lengthy press notes and colourful advertisements decorated with pictures of veterans from UPA too. It is somehow all NC show as ally Congress does not appear to be competing in the race of 'bragging and boasting', no matter it is atypical of the Congress style in following that strategy. At the party level, as always it is the National Conference which celebrates the 'achievements' almost like a festival spread over the days. As if the countless works mentioned so far in the long press releases or through verbal speeches and statements of the NC Ministers, leaders was not enough, NC today came out with one more huge statement parroting the achievements, not forgetting to attack the opposition PDP too. While any opposition party has the right to express views on what the Government is claiming and unbatedly counting in terms of the performance through governance, one of the NC leaders today castigated these observations and termed the approach of the rival party as myopic. The NC leader ironically making the argument ironically counted on rhetorical expressions like restoration of peace along with so called sense of security among people, the slogans like transparency and accountability in the administration and of course the mention of some legislations, which sound so hollow in every sense of the word. However, the point in reference in this piece is not to comment on the set of achievements instead the different approach of two allies in projecting these at the end of every year. Like previous years, the Government as coalition unit has been celebrating the 'success' of five years of governance through huge advertisements in the newspapers. Illustrative ads dotted with pictures of leaders like UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh flaunted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and even Union Minister Farooq Abdullah have contents which are loaded with heavy adjectives spun in solacing slogans of peace and prosperity during the past five years. A couple of ads showed the pics of Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, the only Congress leader at the local level in the 'achievement' trumpetting cards. But on the whole Congress seems to be on somewhat silent mode and mood in so far as trumpetting the achievements are concerned. One wonders why ......? It is a matter of common knowledge that at the political level on many key issues and commitments NC has faltered and chosen deliberate silence while projecting the report card. Congress too knows it well where it has to fulfill the promises made with the masses in previous manifesto also during the course of governance. May be it is this realization that makes Congress reticent, rather than buoyant at this juncture. |
