| Militants kill ASI in first major strike of 2014, three other cops injured in Sopore encounter | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Militants carried out the first major strike of this year by attacking a cordon and search party in the restive Sopore town in North Kashmir's Baramulla district today morning. The militant attack led to the killing of an Assistant Sub Inspector of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police. Three more SOG personnel were injured in the incident while as reports said that the militants managed to give police the slip. The area has been cordoned off with cordon and search operations going on in the Chanakhan and adjoining localities of Sopore area. Reports reaching here said that as soon as the cordon and search party mostly comprising of SOG personnel laid a cordon of Chanakhan area, the militants present there opened fire on them. The initial burst from the militants caught the cordon and search party unawares with the latter being unable to retaliate in the first go. "The initial burst from the militants led to injuries to four SOG personnel and there was total chaos in the locality. The SOG personnel who were injured in the militant attack were identified as Irfan Ahmed from Pulwama, Manzoor Ahmed Ganaie from Panzala-Kupwara, Zakir Ahmed Sheikh from Tarathpora-Handwara and Kafeel Ahmed Mir resident of Keran," said reports. The injured cops were shifted to the Sopore hospital where from they were rushed to Srinagar for further treatment. ASI Kafeel Ahmad who sustained grievous injuries in the militant attack succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in Srinagar. By the time the cordon and search party along with the reinforcements could re-group the militants managed to flee from the encounter site. IGP Kashmir Range, Abdul Ghani Mir told reporters that militants carried out an attack on the cordon and search party that led to the killing of ASI Kafeel. Mir said that police and security agencies had received a tip-off that the militants were present in the Chanakhan locality of Sopore area. "We had information of some militants' presence in Chanakhan area of the township. As the cordon and search party was laying siege of the area they came under a militant attack that led to the martyrdom of Kafeel. Militants lobbed grenades and fired upon the advancing party leading to the casualty and injuries to our boys. The area has been cordoned off to nab the militants who carried out the attack," said the IGP. Later, a wreath laying function was organized at Police Control Room for ASI Kafeel Ahmad. The function was attended by senior police, CRPF and administrative officials. The slain ASI is survived by wife, two children and an aged mother. Meanwhile, militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility of the attack. |
