Golf Association starts week-long coaching

JAMMU, Jan 7: In order to give an impetus to Golf in Jammu and Kashmir State, explore some talent and enable beginners to have a firsthand experience of the sport, Jammu and Kashmir Golf Association (JKGA) today started the first ever week long coaching camp at Jammu Golf Course, Sidhra. The coaching camp was inaugurated by Director Tourism, Jammu Saujanya Sharma who encouraged the participants and hoped that the training classes would prove beneficial for the beginners.
About fifty Junior Amateur participants drawn from different parts of the region and educational institutions were welcomed and encouraged to take up the sport by JKGA officials including Vice President of the organising committee, S S Wazir, Executive Committee members Sanjay Wahi, Treasurer R S Bali besides K K Khosa, Vinod Sharma, D S Bali and Deepak Handa. JKGA affiliated with J&K State Sports Council also provided clubs to the participants to facilitate their training programme.
PGTI coach Sandeep Verma popularly known as Chimi was especially roped in from Delhi to train the beginners who were given basic tips about golfing here at Jammu Gold Course, Sidhra. Ace golfers like Sanjay Wahi, Raghav Wahi, Bhawani Parpar and Deepak Handa also helped the coach in imparting basic training to the beginners.
The beginners were given basic golf tips including ball positioning, basics of correct grip, controlling the speed of putts, correct Tee height for fairway woods, hybrids, how to hold clubs, how to aim and how to chip, choosing the right club for a shot, how to hit from fairway rough, how to make proper practice swing, how to play half golf swing, postures and correct distance from where to hit the ball.
The beginners like Muskaan, Neha, Prerna, Vedant, Narbhay, Vijay, Nirdosh Trehan and Mehak Dua expressed their contentment over the coaching camp and hoped that it would help them in becoming good golfers. Speaking on the occasion, Vice President JKGA, S S Wazir said that that this coaching camp will be held in routine and hoped that JKGA under the benefaction of its Patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for Renewable Energy get a fillip.
Executive Member Sanjay Wahi said that since this was the first coaching camp of its kind in Jammu and Kashmir, parents and their wards have shown great enthusiasm. This, he said was an encouraging sign of golf getting promoted in Jammu and Kashmir State. The state, he said was having golf course of international standards that enables ace golfers drawn from different parts of the world to display their talent here. Wahi hoped that JKGA would be able to produce ace golfers to represent J&K State in international competitions, one day.

DHS School celebrates Birth Day of 10th Sikh Guru

JAMMU, Jan 7: Dogra Higher Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Jammu, celebrated the "Birth Day of 10th Sikh Guru, "GURU GOBIND SINGH Jl" on January 6 with great enthusiasm and religious fervor under the supervision of Managing Director, Gambhir Dev Singh Charak.
The programme started with Sabad Kir tan and Verses chanted from "Guru Grantft Sabab Jl" by the students of the school. The students of Primary Wing were dressed up as Panj Pyaras and chanted sfogans in favour of Sikh Gurus like Raj Krega Khasla, Jo Bole So Nihal Satsri Akal etc. Devinder Kour, Principal, threw light on the life of Guru Govind Singh Ji and Inspired the students to follow the path of the Guru )\ adopting truth and secularism in their life.
Nirmala Koul, Vice Principal, also spoke on the occasion regarding the preachings of the Great Guru Ji and asked the students to study hard to achieve the goal of success in their life.
At the end, 'Karaha Prashada' was distributed among the students and audiences present there by the school management.


8th Christmas Gold Cup Football
Narrow escape for Jammu Sports, Bank Academy

JAMMU, Jan 7: Jammu Sports and J&K Bank Academy had narrow escape against their fighting opponents in the second round of the competition in the 8th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament underway at GGM Science College ground, here today.
Before losing their tie in the pre-quarterfinals stages, Jammu United put in best of their efforts against the young side of J&K Bank Academy but only to lose in tie-breaker.
Earlier, down by two goals in the first half of the play, Jammu United fought from behind to level the score. Arjun and Parveen netted the ball in eighth and 10th minute of the match to put Bank team in commanding position.
After the breather, Jammu United leveled the score with Arun Nangyal striking in the 38th and 57th minutes of the match. Later, in the tie-breaker, Bank Academy emerged winner making it match score of 7-5.
Now, in the quarterfinals, J&K Bank Academy shall take on J&K Police at 2.30 pm tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in another match of the day, Jammu Sports trounced Akhnoor XI 5-4 in sudden death. In the match time, Jammu Sports held Akhnoor XI to a 1-1 draw.
After playing goalless in the first half of the play, Jammu Sports took the first lead in the 44th minute through Sahil. However, the lead was equalized by Akhnoor boys with Sandeep netting the ball in the 59th minute.
FIXTURE: NGR shall take on Young Star at 10 am in pre-quarterfinals; BSF XI to meet Young Rovers at 1 pm in pre-quarterfinals; J&K Bank Academy to face J&K Police at 2.30 pm in quarterfinals tomorrow.


Ishtiyaq hits fastest ton in Police Martyrs' T20 C’ship

KATHUA, Jan 7: Ishtiyaq hit fastest ever century of the tournament to guide Gateway Srinagar to a huge 105 runs win over Khanna Cricket Club Khanna in Punjab in the ongoing 4th Police Martyrs' Memorial North Zone Twenty20 Cricket Championship at Sports Stadium, here today.
It took Ishtiyaq just 37 deliveries to complete his century. He made 115 runs off 46 balls studded with 12 boundaries and nine sixes. Earlier, Gateway Srinagar set a target of 113 runs for the loss of three wickets.
Besides Ishtiyaq, Arshad made unbeaten 32 while Manzoor added 14-ball 31 runs. From Khanna Club, Harpreet bagged two wickets while Ishtiaq took one.
In reply, Khanna Club bowled out for 107 runs in 15.3 overs. Aman remained the top scorer with 22-ball 42 runs. From Gateway Srinagar, Rafiq Baba, Ulfat and Riyaz shared two wickets each.
For his all round performance, Ishtiaq was obvious choice for the man of the match title. He was presented with the cash prize and trophy by special guest, SSP Crime, Shakti Pathak.
Meanwhile, in another match of the day, Sandhu Cricket Club registered an outright nine wickets win over Kathua XI.
Batting first, Kathua XI could not face the bowling wrath of Sandhu Club and bowled out for 79 runs in 14.5 overs. Sheetal and Gandhi were main contributors to the score with 19 and 17 runs respectively. From Sandhu Club, Prince bagged four wickets while Varun took three.
Later, Sandhu Club chased the 80 runs target in just nine overs with nine wickets in hand. Pince made 28-ball 38 runs and Romy contributed 28-ball 32 runs to the total. Gandhi took the only wicket lost by Sandhu Club.
Prince was declared man of the match and presented Rs 1500 cash prize by Assistant Vice President of Chenab Textile Mills.
