| Severe cold, snowfall bring life to halt, situation may worsen | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 7: The Kashmir valley and Jammu region are reeling under severe cold. The entire Kashmir valley has recorded sub-zero temperatures. The heavy snowfall and biting cold have brought the normal life to a standstill across the state. The Ladakh region of the state is the worst hit. Most of the roads have been blocked due to heavy snowfall. Leh town has recorded -17.4 and Kargil has recorded -19 degree Celsius respectively. According to Meteorological officials in the state capital Srinagar, heavy snowfall is expected to hit the valley for the next two days. The snowfall is likely to reduce the temperature further. Last night temperatures at Srinagar was -3.3 degree Celsius, Pahalgam was -14.7 degree Celsius and Gulmarg was -11.6 degree Celsius. If it snows heavily, train, air and road transport services will also be affected once again. Two boys drowned in the famous Pangong lake near Leh, while they were practicing snow hockey on lake surface. The surface cracked taking down the boys. Since first snowfall, more than 15 people have died in road mishaps across the state due to slippery road conditions. Cost of essential commodities like milk, vegetables, meat, medicines etc have gone up due to repeated closure of roads and the valley's only lifeline over 300 kms long Jammu-Srinagar national highway. |
