Jammu, Jan 22: In the election year Omar Abdullah led coalition Government is all out to announce strings of sops to counter growing influence of opposition PDP.
Notwithstanding fiscal condition of the state, Omar Abdullah is desperately exploring ways to woo voters before the Assembly elections. Although Congress, which is coalition partner, is demanding announcement of some sops before the coming general elections, the National Conference is more concerned about next Assembly polls so party would announce keeping in view the state elections. The party has devised a strategy to announce some sops before imposition of code of conduct for general elections so some announcements likely to be made in the coming days.
Sources in the corridors of power that in the next Cabinet meeting Government is likely to announce 10 percent Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees. Next Cabinet meeting is likely to be held on Friday in which announced regarding DA is expected to be made.
Sources said that instead of giving cash arrear of the DA, the Government is thinking to deposit arrears of the employees in their GPF. "Cash DA would be given to the employees from January this year and the arrears would be deposited in their GPF", sources said and added that Government does not want to take confrontation with employees in the elections so announcement in this regard is likely to be made in the next Cabinet meeting.
Government employees have already launched agitation against the Government for their long pending demand.
Sources said that fiscal condition of the state is not permitting the Government to announce DA at this juncture but the Government is all out to appease the agitating employees. "A blue print regarding demands of the employees has already been prepared by the Government but announcements would be made installments", sources said and added that there is possibility that retired age would be hiked by one year and would fix 59. Agitating employees are demanding that retirement age should be 60 like employees of the central Government.
State Government especially ruling NC has already realized that Government employees, whose number is between four to five lakh, are not happy because delay tactics has been adopted by the authorities to fulfil their demands so it is likely that some of their demands would be fulfilled in the next couple of months.
