Arvind Kejriwal power hungry: Anna Hazare
2/28/2014 10:46:48 PM
PUNE: Apparently disappointed with Arvind Kejriwal for not responding to his 17-point agenda, social activist Anna Hazare accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader of being power hungry.
In a statement issued here, Hazare said: "I had handed over a 17-point agenda letter to Kejriwal and told him that I would support him if he agrees to it. But till date, neither Kejriwal nor his party has given me any assurance on it. It is now very clear that these (AAP and Kejriwal) people are thinking of power more than of the nation. (Even if AAP comes to power) nation will not have any bright future as there will be no difference between them and other parties."
Hazare has endorsed Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as a likely prime ministerial candidate. Banerjee had agreed to Hazare's 17-point agenda, which includes village-centric social and economic initiatives and proposals such as boosting vocational education and stricter laws against corruption.
"I didn't support any political party in the past. For the first time in my life, I have announced support to Banerjee because no other party responded to my letter except her.
I feel if the 17-point agenda is implemented, it will change the entire picture of the nation," he said.
The social activist reiterated that Banerjee's "austere lifestyle" and her "sincerity" has not been seen in any other leader in the country. "I came to the conclusion that people like her should lead the nation. I agree to her views... I have not supported Banerjee or her party, but their social and national thoughts... my support is limited only to the forthcoming elections," he said.
Hazare said that transfer of power from one party to another was not going to change the national picture but that the entire system needed restructuring. "Banerjee is working in West Bengal with this idea. If the idea spreads in the nation, we will see a different picture altogether," he said.
Hazare's criticism of AAP comes on the backdrop of Team Anna criticizing the AAP for sidelining Hazare after getting power in New Delhi. Interestingly, Team Anna members have already announced that the Gandhian will support independent candidates, saying that the people have lost hope in the AAP after it failed to govern in New Delhi.
