| Entry of NPP, JKDF in poll fray to favour Azad in Udhampur | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 26 : Political analysts in state are in opinion that joining of poll fray by Panthers Party supremo, Prof Bhium Singh and Anil Gupta of JKDF from Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency may prove significant factor in favour of Congress candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad. Substantiating their observations they cited that both Bhim Singh and Former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, father of Anil Gupta have been contesting from the Udhampur seat for the last sever al years, however Prof Gupta has won twice while Bhim Singh yet has to open his account. And it shows the duo a good chunk of votes in their favour and throng of their hats in poll arena may steal vote from BJP giving a tilt towards Azad's side. According to past records, Bhim Singh has had a difficult phase right from 1984 when he entered the poll battle for the first time. In 1984 he had polled over 95,000 votes. In 1989 he had polled over 22,000 votes and in 1996 election he had polled over 23,000 votes though their was a drop in vote share but still he holds a greater chunk of votes. Poll pundits are of the opinion that entry of Anil Gupta and Bhim Singh may lead to major split in the non-Congress voters giving definite advantage to Ghulam Nabi Azad. At the most he may have to face the PDP candidate Arshad Malik who could get some support from voters supporting the Muftis. In a bid to cripple BJPs chance to make any headway from Udhampur-Doda, the erstwhile Sangh veteran Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has fielded his son Anil Gupta. It has further improved Congress's Ghulam Nabi Azad chances to make a clean sweep from the seat. After Modi's Jammu visit in last December, the BJP started mending its fence with the six of the seven 'rebel' lawmakers who were thrown out of the party for supporting Congress in legislative council polls earlier. While all were called back and their dignity restored, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta was not recalled with a belief that it was Prof Gupta who led the six lawmakers to support the ruling coalition. Now Prof Gupta seems to be paying the party back by fielding his son Anil Gupta from Udhampur. Prof Gupta basically hails from the area and has represented the constituency twice in recent past. During that period, locals believe, Prof Gupta invested substantially in the town and enjoys a good rapport with the residents. Anil's vote share would be a net deduction to BJPs candidate Dr Jintendera Singh, who was chosen over Dr Nirmal Singh, the old party guard who missed his victories barely by whiskers twice. Poll Pundits are pessimistic about success chances of Bhim Singh and Anil Gupta but they believe that the two could harm the BJP to allow some advantage to Azad. |
