| JSM flays commercialization of roads through 'Toll Plazas' | | | Jammu, Mar 26: Prof Virender Gupta, the President of Jammu State Morcha (JSM) opposed the construction of Toll Tax Plazas on national highways in state. JSM president, Prof Gupta in a statement issued today said that central as well State Governments are charging heavy levy on the petrol and diesel which amounts to about 40 percent and in addition to that there is a surcharge on these items.
'The revenue collected on petrol and diesel is to be utilized in building and maintenance of roads, he said and added, "apart from this there exist toll collecting center at the entry point of the state and the transport department also charge whopping amount of revenue yearly." He added that thus there is no justification in charging extra amount in the name of Toll at different points on the National Highways. Government must meet the expenditure on widening of the roads or in construction of new roads from its own instead of overloading the people with taxes on one pretext or the other. |
