Early Times report Jammu, May 1: The historic May Day was observed at Kathua as a mark of respect to the workers, who shed their blood for the establishment of the rights of the working class in 1886. Addressing a programme organized at Kathua, Retired Master, Shiv Nandan recollected the sacrifice made by the laborers for their rights. "On this day 119 years ago, the workers of the Hay Market of Chicago City, USA sacrificed their lives for ensuring eight hour working day for them", he said, adding that since then, the day is being observed all over the world as the day of solidarity with working people. Criticizing contract system in engagement of labour in factories, he suggested that Capitalist should make friendly relation with work force (Labour). "It will increase production in factories. If Capitalists (owners of any business establishment) prevent engagement of labour through any contractor", he said, adding that involvement of contractor was creating communication gap between both. He further said that due to contract system most of grievances of labour remain un-listened. Meanwhile, a similar function was also organized at Railway Station Kathua in which locals of adjoining areas have participated. Different trade and labour organizations, unions, human right organisations, socio-cultural organisations and political parties also observed the day by holding rallies, cultural programmes. |
