| Cong worried as BJP gains ground in Ladakh | | | ET Report LEH, May 1: Gradually BJP is gaining ground in the cold desert and party is giving tough fight to the "strong" Congress on Ladakh Parliamentary seat-thanks to the effective campaign launched by the central leadership with the support of the state unit. The BJP, which has fielded political stalwart, Thupstan Chhewang as party candidate for Ladakh Parliamentary seat, was not expecting such a positive response from the voters of this mountainous region-which borders Pakistan on one side and China on other side. The factions gripped Congress, which is strong force in Ladakh, finding it difficult to counter growing clout of BJP in the cold desert where the BJP was never a force to reckon with earlier. Riding on "Modi Wave" and credibility of its party nominee, BJP during the last one week has gained ground in entire Ladakh region including Muslim dominated Kargil district. During the last one week, BJP has re-activated its campaign as leaders from Jammu are already camping there and some prominent religious figures have also reached Leh and Kargil to mobilize public opinion. BJP is trying to get maximum number of Buddhists votes so party has deputed some prominent Buddhist leaders from Arunachal Pradesh to mobilize Buddhist voters. These Buddhist leaders from Arunachal Pradesh are associated with BJP so party has been utilizing their services. For the last one week, these Buddhist leaders are camping in Leh and holding meetings with common people and religious leaders also. Without much publicity party has also deputed some Muslim leaders especially Shia from different parts of the country to hold interaction with Shias of Kargil. BJP has deputed these Shia leaders to get minimum 25 percent of Shia votes of Kargil. Ladakh Parliamentary segment is comprised of two districts namely Leh and Kargil with a total voters of 159949 including 81168 males and 78785 as females. This Parliamentary segment is comprised of four Assembly seats namely Nobra, Leh, Zanskar and Kargil. Last time Independent candidate Hassan Khan, who was unofficially supported by National Conference, had won this seat but this time he is not in the fray. |
