'Maverick' Farooq predicts downfall of United Progressive Alliance well in advance
Says no personal problem with Narendra Modi
5/1/2014 11:59:52 PM
Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, May 1: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah seems to have read the writing on the wall and understood the fact that Congress led United Progressive Alliance is on the way of exit as far as formation of new Government at the Centre is concerned.
In a television interview recently, Dr. Abdullah said that UPA would not be able to form the next Government at the centre. He even went to the extent of saying that Rahul Gandhi may have the Prime Ministerial material in him, but as on date he is not competent and capable to lead the country.
A 'maverick' by nature, National Conference President has the habit of making statements and then retracting from the same after some time. Not long ago, Dr. Abdullah said that Bharatiya Janta Party is living in a fool's paradise that they would form the next union Government. He said that Narendra Modi can never become the Prime Minister of India adding that same would be disastrous for the country as a whole.
The National Conference President has acknowledged that the present UPA Government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh made many mistakes over the past five years. He said the alliance would pay for the mistakes during the Lok Sabha elections being conducted these days across the length and breadth of the country.
Heading a political opportunist party, Dr. Abdullah may soon sing songs in praise of Narendra Modi and people won't be surprised. The common masses are well aware about his 'dual' character and also changing stance of his party. If National Conference changes its side from UPA to National Democratic Alliance people won't be surprised.
In fact the National Conference President has taken the initial step of forging friendly relations with Modi who is tipped to be the next Prime Minister of country. During the campaigning for the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat, Dr. Abdullah who is the coalition's candidate for this seat said that he has nothing personal problem against BJP's Prime Ministerial face.
Not long ago, the National Conference President lambasted Modi and said that he is a 'mass murderer'. He said that BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate killed thousands of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002 and even did not apologize later on. How did Modi's face or attitude change within no time, only National Conference President can answer?
It would be in place to mention here that National Conference was part of BJP led National Democratic Alliance Government with Atal Bihari Vajpayee being the Prime Minister between 1998 and 2004. NC's working president and Chief Minister of the state, Omar Abdullah was the junior Minister for External Affairs and Commerce on two separate occasions in NDA Government.
Furthermore, National Conference party as a whole and its President in particular are quite apprehensive of alliance with Congress in this year's Assembly elections since the Congress is all set to lose power at the Centre. The Congress party may go alone in the Assembly elections and not take chance of alliance with NC given the fact that its workers would oppose any such move more so in Kashmir valley.
