| Soibugh fumes over arrest of 2 youth Villagers, police exchange brickbats | | | Shakeel A Khan
BUDGAM, May 2: Trouble broke out in the Soibugh village of this Central Kashmir district after the police arrested two youth on charges of stone pelting that took place in the village on April 30, day for polling for Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat. Eye-witnesses told Early Times that a group of youth pelted stones on police and security forces personnel in the villages while expressing anger over the arrest of the two youth. The disruption brought activities to the grinding halt in the village and the adjacent ones. Ding dong battles between two sides were going at the filing of this report. "Early in the day police arrested two youth namely Gulzar Ahmad Malik and Kaka Khan on the charges of stone pelting. Both Gulzar and Kaka were arrested on the pretext of creating unrest on the polling day. The arrest of the two youth led to anger among the people and they demanded their immediate release," said eye-witnesses. Mohammad Kamal, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader from the area went to the police post Soibugh to seek the release of the arrested youth. At the same time many youth had got assembled outside the police post. "The in charge police post sensed that the youth might attack the police post and he flashed a message for reinforcement. The reinforcement party without ascertaining the facts and reasons immediately after arriving at Soibugh main chowk swung into action and fired many a teargas shells towards the youth who were present there in good numbers," said eye-witnesses. Following this the trouble started and the two sides got engaged in ding dong battles. The security forces and police personnel chased the youth down the lanes. The youth pelted stones on them causing fear among the ranks of the people of the village. The panic also spread to the adjoining villages as well. Last reports from the area said that roads and lanes wore a deserted look as there was a curfew like situation with the security forces intensifying the patrolling. Meanwhile, reports from Narbal said that the day was marked by violence as groups of youth pelted stones on police and security forces personnel. The youth were protesting against the killing of Bashir Ahmad Bhat who died in a firing incident at Nawa Kadal in downtown Srinagar on April 30. Ding dong battles continued in the area for the whole day. The situation was under control though uneasy calm prevailed in the area. Undeclared curfew was in force in the area making vehicular movement a difficult job since road through this area leads to Gulmarg, world famous ski resort. |
