Boycott shadow looms large over Baramulla constituency

JAMMU, May 3: With polling for Baramulla Lok Sabha seat just four days away, the shadow of poll boycott is looming large in this constituency also as the electors in other two constituencies of Anantnag and Srinagar where almost 70 percent of voters chose to stay away from the booths. However, the Baramulla Constituency has the distinction of setting bench mark for at least a moderate voter turnout since 1999.
It would be interesting to watch on May 7 that how this Lok Sabha segment would be able to maintain its record of highest voter turnout among all the three constituencies of Kashmir Valley.
As the shadow of poll boycott and terrorist threats lurking around, living up to the reputation of leading the polling percentage figures among the three constituencies in Kashmir region could be an uphill task for this constituency, which remained a torch bearer of democracy all through these years.
Not only that Baramulla constituency maintained its supremacy in voter turnout, it also witnessed a substantial increase in voter turnout in the last three Lok Sabha polls as this segment recorded an addition of votes polled in every General Election from 1999 onwards.
The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 27.79 percent in 1999-Lok Sabha polls when militancy was at its peak and the elections were held under the shadow of gun.
However, in the same election the other two parliamentary constituencies of Valley viz a viz Srinagar and Anantnag were way behind Baramulla as they recorded a polling percentage of paltry 11.93 and 14.32 respectively.
In 2004 General Elections, the Baramulla parliamentary constituency registered polling at 35.65 percent there by recording an addition of almost 8 percent of voter turnout from 1999 Lok Sabha polls.
Here again, the Srinagar constituency and Anantnag had no match to the polling percentage of Baramulla as the voter turnout in these segments was much low since the figures stood at 18.57 and 15.04 percent respectively.
The Baramulla constituency again led the voter turnout figures in 2009-Lok Sabha polls when the segment witnessed 41.84 of the total electors exercised their right to franchise.
The percentage in voting rose by about 6 percent in comparison to General Elections of 2004.
Whereas it counterparts Srinagar and Anantnag again came out with disappointing figures of 25.55 and 27.09 percent of voting respectively.
